You’ve probably heard of sclerotherapy if you’re looking into vein treatments — but did you know there are two types to consider? At South Austin Vein Center, founded by Dr. Michael M. Di Iorio, our patients receive personalized, minimally invasive vein treatments to relieve discomfort, restore healthy circulation, and improve appearance.
With more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Di Iorio and our team provide advanced options, including both foam and liquid sclerotherapy. While each method is highly effective, the best choice depends on the size, location, and severity of the veins being treated.
How Sclerotherapy Works
Sclerotherapy is one of the most time-tested and reliable treatments for spider and varicose veins. The procedure involves injecting a specialized solution into the affected veins, causing their walls to collapse and seal shut.
Over time, the treated veins are naturally reabsorbed by the body, allowing blood to reroute to healthier vessels. The result is smoother, clearer legs and improved circulation.
The main difference between foam and liquid sclerotherapy lies in the form of the solution used. Both options achieve excellent results but are suited for different types of veins.
Foam Sclerotherapy: Ideal for Larger Veins
Foam sclerotherapy, often performed with Varithena®, combines the sclerosing agent with air or gas to create a lightweight foam.
This foam displaces blood within the vein, allowing the medication to adhere more evenly to the vessel walls. Because it stays in contact with the vein longer than liquid solutions, the foam is particularly effective for larger or deeper veins.
Another benefit is that foam is visible under ultrasound, allowing Dr. Di Iorio to guide treatment with peak precision. Most patients find the procedure comfortable and appreciate the quick recovery time, typically resuming normal activities the same day.
Liquid Sclerotherapy: Perfect for Smaller Veins
Dr. Di Iorio may use liquid sclerotherapy to treat fine spider veins and the slightly larger reticular veins that may appear closer to the skin’s surface. The liquid solution spreads smoothly through delicate veins, sealing them efficiently without excess pressure. It’s ideal for cosmetic improvements and touch-up treatments following other procedures.
While results vary based on the vein size and treatment plan, most patients require a few sessions for optimal results.
