What Is the VenaSeal™ Treatment for Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins can cause aching, heaviness, and visible bulging veins in the legs. Many patients want a vein treatment that works effectively without the discomfort or downtime associated with older procedures. One option gaining attention is VenaSeal™, a minimally invasive treatment that closes problematic veins using a specialized medical adhesive.

At South Austin Vein Center, with locations in Austin and Bee Cave, Dr. Michael M. Di Iorio treats varicose veins using advanced, minimally invasive treatments that require little to no downtime. VenaSeal is a standout in that regard.

How VenaSeal Works

VenaSeal treats varicose veins by closing the affected vein from the inside. During the procedure, Dr. Di Iorio inserts a small catheter into the damaged vein and delivers a medical adhesive that seals the vein shut. Once the vein is closed, blood automatically reroutes to nearby healthy veins.

Because the treated vein is no longer carrying blood, symptoms such as swelling, aching, and heaviness often improve. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the closed vein.

Why Some Patients Choose VenaSeal

Traditional vein treatments, such as radiofrequency ablation, are highly effective but use heat to close veins. This can require multiple injections of numbing medication along the length of the vein.

VenaSeal works differently. It requires fewer injections and doesn’t use thermal energy. We offer both heat-based vein closure and VenaSeal, as well as other options like sclerotherapy and ambulatory microphlebectomy, to give our patients the widest range of choices.

Another benefit of VenaSeal is that most patients don’t need to wear compression stockings after treatment. This can make recovery simpler compared with some other vein procedures.

Most VenaSeal treatments take less than an hour and are performed in an outpatient setting. Patients typically walk immediately after the procedure and return to normal activities quickly.

Because the technique does not use heat, there is often less bruising and discomfort compared with some traditional vein treatments. Dr. Di Iorio will give specific guidance on activity, walking, and follow-up care to ensure the best outcome.
