Can Crossing Your Legs Cause Varicose Veins?

Woman sits on the floor and crosses one leg over the other, revealing signs of vein disease

Many people have heard they shouldn’t cross their legs because it could cause varicose veinsIt’s a common worry, but is it actually true? At South Austin Vein Center, we’re passionate about spreading the truth about vein disease and helping our patients find long-lasting symptom relief. In our October blog, we’re looking at what really causes varicose veins and discussing whether crossing your legs is something to avoid.

The Myth Explained

The idea that crossing your legs can cause varicose veins has been around for years. While sitting with legs crossed may create temporary pressure and make veins appear more visible, it is not a direct cause of varicose veins. At most, sitting with your legs crossed can exacerbate existing symptoms, such as heaviness or swelling, but it’s not the underlying cause.

What Really Causes Varicose Veins

Varicose veins develop when the valves inside your veins weaken and no longer move blood efficiently back to the heart. This leads to the pooling of blood, which then causes veins to stretch, bulge, and twist into prominent ropes.

Common risk factors are:

  • Genetics
  • Age (more common in middle age and beyond)
  • Excess weight
  • Prolonged standing or sitting
  • Gender (women are more susceptible)

Many people with varicose veins have multiple factors at work.

Crossing your legs could affect other aspects of your health, though. One study concluded that people who crossed their legs at the knee experienced higher blood pressure than those who only crossed their legs at the ankle. That’s why medical providers always ask you to have both legs flat on the floor before taking your blood pressure.

Does Leg Crossing Make Symptoms Worse?

For individuals who already have varicose veins or early signs of vein disease, crossing the legs for extended periods may exacerbate discomfort. It can slow circulation slightly, making swelling, tingling, or that heavy-leg feeling more noticeable. However, it does not create new varicose veins.

Better Habits for Vein Health

Simple steps, such as walking regularly, elevating your legs when resting, wearing compression stockings, managing your weight, and avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting, all help reduce symptoms and protect vein health over time.
